The Glorious Qur’an talks about the devil or the shaitan. The Qur’an tells us that he is our biggest enemy (2:168, 2:208, 6:142, 7:22, 12:5) for at least ten reasons:
• He makes people slip (2:36),
• He leads people astray far away from the righteous path (4:60),
• The followers of the shaitan definitely lose big (4:119),
• The shaitan exacts enmity and hatred among Muslims (5:91),
• He deceives Muslims by making their sinful acts alluring to them (4:63, 8:48, 16:63),
• He whispers suggestions ( hama-zat ) to people (7:20),
• The shaitan works in families by making brothers hate each other (12;100),
• He is a specialist in promoting dissensions (17:53),
• The shaitan leaves his stains on people ( 8:11 ),
• He causes people to fail because of some evil acts he himself encouraged in the first place (3:155),
• He scares his own party – hez-bosh-shaitan ( 3:175 ),
Allah sub-hanaho-wata-ala guides Muslims to the way of fighting the shaitan by guarding themselves through asking Allah for protection ( 3:36 ) and seeking refuge with Allah ( 7:200, 7;201 ). We are also requested not to follow the steps of the devil (2:168). The shaitan executes his plans step by step. If the shaitan wants to end the life of a young man/woman, he starts with a simple but attractive introduction: let us have a drink, it is a part of growing up, every body is doing it. In no time, the deceived young man/woman finds himself in a bar with other evil ones. This may lead to participation in gang activities which leads to trouble with the Law. We are warned against taking the Evil One as an intimate because doing so, is the worst act people can do ( 4:38 ).
The shaitan destroys people by leading them away from Allah. First, he invites Muslims to belong to his party giving them suggestions of hate, negative thinking ensuring that they do not go forward. He keeps them out of the race of life. Fourth, he makes Muslims go backward (not forward) at all levels: individual, family, community, and global. At the individual level, he takes them to drugs and different crimes and all of us know cases of delinquency of young people in our community. He whispers to them and they accept his invitation allowing themselves to be ridden by the devil. Young Muslims need our attention. If we lose out on our young people now, who will attend our masajid in the future? We should attract young people to the masajid by inviting them respecting them and accepting them the way they are. They must be given the chance of expressing their feelings and their ideas. Young people should receive Islam as a religion of ease not a religion of difficulty. If we close the doors of our masajid to young people, they may go instead to evil doors, and there are many of them around. Between you and I, if we don’t keep them busy now , they will keep us busy in the future .
If we want to protect our young people from going astray we may have to pay. Paying now is easy and painless but paying in the future could be difficult and painful. As the saying goes, ” an ounce of protection is better than a pound of treatment.” Which is better: paying for education and recreation now or paying for legal fees to get our young people out of jails in the future?
At the family level, the shaitan finds a fertile soil to put the seeds of destruction. The shaitan party (the Evil One and his crew) will cause dissensions among family members. The shaitan gets in the driver’s seat and confuses the minds of the parents: husbands and wives. Some husbands or parents run their families as dictators. We often hear men saying: “my word goes, fair or not fair, I don’t care.” My dear friends, where are the Islamic principles of family management? Where did consultation (ma-sho-rah) go? Did you forget love, kindness, mercy and mutual protection (le-bas)? Some fathers or husbands don’t make their homes Qiblah as requested by the Book
( 10:87 ) but they make their homes, hotels where they eat, drink, watch TV, and sleep . The Evil One works on the minds of some wives who make life difficult for their families. The shaitan focuses on breaking homes and we see examples around us.
At the community level, the shaitan finds ways of breaking the whole into parts. Allah wants us to unite but the shaitan invites us to divide, and he wins. The Evil One confuses our leaders in planning to reach their visions and or missions. We ask Allah to guide our leaders to the proper path and to help them to set their priorities straight. Our leaders should think of themselves as servants to the community. They lead us best when they serve us best. Open communications are essential. Building our youth should be a top priority. A central Muslim Youth and recreation complex is badly needed.
At the global level, we find many examples of the stains of the devil. The Muslim World is weak. The Evil One is working at capacity and the party of shaitan is almost taking over. Each one of us, including the messengers, have an enemy: evil ones among men and jinns inspiring each other with flowery discourses by way of deception ( 6:112 ) All people, good or bad are on the radar screen of the shaitan; the shaitan said, “I will lie and wait for them on Your Straight Way” ( 7:16 )
Can we hold the shaitan accountable? What is exactly his position? The Qur’an (14;22 ) describes the position of the shaitan when he talks to the people who followed him, ” don’t blame me but blame yourselves, I only invited you and you are the ones who did accept my invitation .”
